Jojoba oil closely resembles the natural sebum your scalp produces, making it effective for balancing oil production whether you have an oily or dry scalp. It may help moisturize and strengthen hair, reduce dandruff, and add shine. Its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties support scalp health.
Jojoba oil is extracted from the seeds of jojoba shrubs, which grow in the desert regions of Arizona, southern California, and Mexico. Long used as a natural remedy, it has become a popular ingredient in moisturizing shampoos and hair care products.
Benefits of jojoba oil for hair
“Jojoba oil is incredibly nourishing,” says Mayara Macedo, a hairstylist and scalp specialist in NYC. “It’s a natural oil that closely resembles the sebum our skin and scalp produce.” Because of this similarity, Macedo says it’s highly compatible with the body and works well as a balancing treatment — whether you have an oily or dry scalp.
Moisturizes, adds shine, and balances oil production
“If you’re dealing with dryness, jojoba oil is fantastic for adding moisture to your scalp,” Macedo says. “Its natural hydrating properties help restore balance, leaving everything healthier and more manageable.”
For those with oily scalps, Macedo explains that excess oil production can sometimes be the scalp overcompensating for a lack of moisture. Applying jojoba oil may help signal to the scalp that it has enough hydration, potentially slowing down excess sebum production.
Helps with dandruff
“Jojoba oil has been known for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties in addition to its conditioning and emollient properties,” says Kseniya Kobets, MD, a board-certified dermatologist and Director of Cosmetic Dermatology at Montefiore Einstein Advanced Care. These properties can help address dry, irritating dandruff.
Strengthens hair and reduces breakage
Jojoba oil may help moisturize hair follicles, which can reduce dryness — a condition that contributes to breakage, hair loss, and dandruff. It may also help improve the overall health of hair, including split ends.
Note: While jojoba oil supports scalp health and hair condition, it is not considered a primary treatment for hair loss. Clinically proven options like minoxidil remain the standard recommendation for that purpose.
How to use jojoba oil on hair
Macedo recommends focusing jojoba oil application on the scalp rather than the full length of the hair, noting that other oils such as argan oil tend to work better for mid-lengths and ends. To use it, massage a few drops directly onto the scalp and leave it on for at least 30 minutes — or overnight — before washing out. It can also be added to shampoo or combined with rosemary oil as a hair mask.
